AITC15 Author Spotlight: Kandi Steiner

Q. What made you start writing. A. I started writing way back in 4th grade. Back then it was mostly poems and short stories. In middle school, I made my own newspaper and distributed it to my friends. It was a big hit and everyone looked forward to Wednesdays (the days I handed them out). Of course it wasn’t really much news, more like stories on random people in the school and on the kids in our class. But, it was fun and everyone loved reading it. I had games in the back and giveaways, too. Well, eventually I was busted and told I wasn’t allowed to do it anymore – but, my principal was impressed and had me writing features for the high school newspaper. So that was fun. :) College is where I really dived into my writing. High school I was on the editor for the yearbook and took some creative writing courses, but college really opened up the doors to expand my writing and see how far I could push myself. It was then that I knew I wanted to write. I wanted others to read my work the way my professors did and say the things they said to me. But most of all, I wanted to share the stories in my head with the world. I still stand today saying that I really could care less if I make a single dime off my work as long as people love to read it and share it with others. While I was at UCF, I was insanely busy – working 3 jobs to pay for college along with being involved in literally everything I could be. So I really didn’t get started writing seriously until I graduated. I made writing and publishing Tag Chaser my New Year’s Resolution in 2013 and made it happen. I’m so happy I did, because now I feel like I’m in full flight. :) Q. What are your favorite book genres. A. NA Romance, YA romance, Dystopian, YA Fantasy (mostly along the lines of HP), Comedy, Inspirational autobiographies and I still have a love for the classics of literature like Gatsby and Catcher in the Rye.  Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about. A. Wow, I’ve never been asked this before! I hate to say I would “never” write something, but I’m pretty confident I won’t ever be able to write a fantasy novel. I think I’m much better at writing romance and real-life situations than I am at creating an entirely new world – but I envy those that can do it! Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be. A. Dystopian/Fantasty for sure. I would love to be able to write worlds like that! I think Erotica would be fun, too. Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors. A. Jamie McGuire, J.K. Rowling, Jillian Dodd, Cassie Graham, Maegan Abel, Suzanne Collins, Cora Carmack, Nicholas Sparks, E.L. James, Teresa Mummert, and a whole slew of others. These are the first ones who popped into my head.  Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them. A. I would LOVE to have dinner and chat with J.D. Salinger. I want to get inside the head of the man behind Holden Caufield. He’s still one of my favorite characters ever! Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author. A. Of the books I have out right now, I would say readers should pick up Song Chaser to really get a feel of who I am as an author. I believe it’s my best work so far. However, I’m currently working on Black Number Four which I’m hoping will be released this Spring and I think it will outshine my Chaser series. I would say that all in all, my books are funny, steamy, and will pull at the heart strings. What I hear more than anything from my readers is that they feel like I’m sitting with them telling them a story when they read my books – that’s how I would describe my writing style. Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about? A. Follow me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/kandisteiner and on Twitter at www.twitter.com/kandisteiner. I love to hang out with my friends on social and I’m up for answering any other questions you have. :)

Q. What made you start writing.

A. Writing for publication took some time. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, but in 2009 was when I started to take it seriously. I had a VERY vivid dream about a girl dancing at a party and a boy with very blue eyes been mesmerized with her. As soon as I woke up I started writing My Paper Heart and I haven’t stopped since.

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. I’m a big legal thriller fan. I could never write the stuff but I love to read it.

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. I love thrillers with the action, drama, suspense and the mystery woven together. The only problem is I can’t write that. I’ve tried. I’ve always wanted to write a book that was a Law & Order: SVU meets The Walking Dead but I just don’t have it in me. I blame my years of making pumpkin butter and watching PBS.

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. I would really love to do science fiction thrillers. I do have a manuscript sitting on my computer that is that but I’m afraid that everyone expects kissing books and they would be disappointed in a book that’s more about the fight to survive than the fight for love.

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. I have a huge lady crush on Lauren Myracle. Shine is one of my all-time favorite books. I also love Charlaine Harris and Sarah Dessen. I’m diverse like that.

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. I would love to sit down and just talk world building with Charlaine Harris. Have you read the Sookie books? Vampires, Werewolves, Fae and all woven together? Freaking brilliant!

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. Meeeeerrrrrr.

People think us authors like to talk about ourselves, but we actually hate it. Okay. I hate doing shameless self promo. I’m better at talking about other authors.

I have twenty titles out now (maybe more). I do currently have three books that are free (How to Date an Alien, One Wild Night and My Paper Heart) so you can totally read those if you think I’m weird but want to check them out.

But I’d have to say that my favorite book is The Only Exception. It’s about a broken girl who transfers school only to move next door to the conservative governor’s son. It’s an ugly cry book and deals with some really hard issues. But I love it. I love the characters and everything about it.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. My next book coming out is On Paper Wings (the sequel to My Paper Heart) which comes out November 13th.

ANNNNND, I should have Tripp Chapman’s (the black sheep of a political dynasty) book out by the event.

Q. What made you start writing.

A. I just started writing in Middle School. I never really thought about it just wrote down what I was feeling.

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. Paranormal
Urban Fantasy
Thriller/Suspense
Taboo subjects
Anything M/M or menage

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. I never say never in writing. It all depends on what’s going on. I do have lines I don’t want to cross but in writing you get so immersed in the characters that sometimes what they do surprises you…

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. I’m currently trying my hand at Dark Romance Suspense/Thriller. Just regular old humans and their issues.

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. So many…so freaking many!
Kim Harrison
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Anne Rice
Shelly Laurenston
Cristy Rey
Kimber S Dawn
M Robinson
James Patterson
Lisa Gardner
Ilona Andrews
Patrica Briggs
RL Stine
Robert Frost
Christopher Pike
So many more!

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. I would be too anxiety to ask them anything besides trying not to pass out. I met Kresley Cole in May and I almost had a panic attack. Factor that in and if I ever met Anne Rice I’d probably die.

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. I would say my newest release And So She Waited. I took a lot of my own life and experiences. I LOVE my paranormal books but this one is the one that hits closer to home for me. It could have very easily been my life at times.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. Thank you all so much for taking the time to read my spotlight. I am working on my Dark Romance Suspense/Thriller about two people finding love in the middle of an active serial killer. I’m excited about it. It will be called Looking For Love – A Red Moon Killer Novel and most of the updates will come from the page make especially for it.

Q. What made you start writing.

A. I always wanted to write, but life took a different direction. My dream of writing and actually being published was just a dream. One day back in 2012, my husband asked me this question. “What are you waiting for?” and I didn’t have an answer for him. What was I waiting for? One summer day on August 12, 2012, I wrote my first sentence to my first book…”A Changed Life” and from that moment, my life changed forever and I became a published author one year later. Dreams do come true!

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. Adult Contemporary Romance

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. Hard core erotica. I blush just writing some of the more tamer words that I use in my own books.

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. M/M Gay Fiction

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. A.L. Jackson
Kristen Proby
Kelly Elliott
R.K. Lilley
Raine Miller
Michelle Valentine
Tina Reber
Sylvain Reynard
Sylvia Day, E.L. James, Katie Ashley, Kindle Alexander, Ella Frank, W. Ferraro, and many more:)

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. Jane Austen – Because she was an amazing writer and definitely a head of her time.

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. I love Romance. I believe in the ‘Happily Ever After’ but I make my characters work for it. I’ve recently discovered while editing my 4th book, but 3rd in the Forever Series that real life truly does imitate art. I had written a love letter over 20 years ago to my husband, and I picked up on a sentence in “Our Forever Promise” that line belonged to my husband first, and now it belongs to Walker & Reese. I would recommend my Forever Series. Begin with Forever, Book One, Second Chance at Forever, Book Two, (which were Amazon Best Sellers) my 3rd in the series is Our Forever Promise, and I truly believe this is my best work. It has it all.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. I’m currently working on Our Forever Promise, book 3 in the Forever Series. Releasing on January 13, 2015

I do plan on writing a novella (book 4) for the Forever Series, but not right away. I want to begin a new project. I haven’t decided if it will be a stand alone or a new series. I’ll make that decision once I wrap with my current work.

xoxo…Mary

Q. What made you start writing.

A. The stories in my head wouldn’t be quieted. Right now I probably have about four or five books that I need to get on paper. My mind is constantly churning. I still have a full length love triangle that I wrote in my head from start to finish about 15 years ago that I need to write down – and I remember all of it!

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. I love male/male romance. That’s what I read, but I write both m/m and m/f . . . and m/m/f. ;-)

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. I think paranormal is really hard. In theory,it sounds easy, because there are no boundaries. Reality is limited only to your imagination, but I think if I wrote paranormal it would be so far fetched that it would be unbelievable . . . or people would question my sanity. LOL.

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. I think it would be horror. I would love to unlock that deep fear inside of people that make them scared to sleep with the light out at night. :-)

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. I’m old school. I absolutely love Jackie Collins. IMO, she started it all. I don’t think there was a lot of erotic romance back when she started writing. She opened a door and pushed boundaries. She continues to write about a character (Lucky Santangelo) that I still want to read about decades later.

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. , I’m going old school with Stephen King. The man has a dark, psychotic streak that I find fascinating. I would ask him if he was ever disturbed by some of the thoughts in his head, or if he ever wonders why his mind conjures up such macabre stories. I don’t know how many years it has been, but IT and Pennywise the Clown still scares the sh*t out of me!

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. The Prince of Punk Rock (Radical Rock Stars Book One). I could write about Tommy and Jessi Blade and Angel Garcia forever. The other band members of Immortal Angel also have unique stories, and their lives all intertwine with one another. Here is a little look into the first two installments of the Radical Rock Stars series:
The Prince of Punk Rock (Radical Rock Stars Book One)
I love her, but I also love him.
She’s everything to me.
He sets my world on fire.
It’s our dirty little secret, and it’s about to blow our record deal sky high.
I’m Tommy Blade, the Prince of Punk Rock, and this is our story.
Amazon: http://amzn.to/MG7R3u

Between A Rock and A Hard Place (Radical Rock Stars Book 2)
She’s a rock goddess.
He’s a sex pistol.
I need them both, in my life and in my bed, and I’m not living without either one of them.
I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them there, even if it costs me everything I ever wanted.
I’m Tommy Blade, The Prince of Punk Rock, and this is the continuation of our story.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. Book Two in the Radical Rock Stars series (Between A Rock and A Hard Place) just came out last week. Reviews are in and people are loving it! Book Three will be released in the spring of 2015.

I would like to thank all the readers and bloggers for their support and friendship. It means the world to me! <3

Q. What made you start writing.

A. I always loved writing but dropped it when I left New Jersey. I had a dream one night that I thought would make for an awesome book and my husband told me to write it. Once I started writing again, it was like I never stopped.

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. I love everything really. The only thing I don’t read is science fiction. I have a hard time getting into that.

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. I would never want to limit myself when it comes to writing. I can see myself writing anything and everything as long as the storyline is flowing through my head.

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. Children books. My children are everything to me and my son loves books so it makes sense. I would love to be able to write books that children want to read before they go to bed.

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. Jillian Dodd, T.H. Snyder, Ella Frank, Skye Turner, Abbi Glines, Michelle Valentine, FL Jacob, Harper Sloan, Chelle Bliss, Stacey Bentley, Kathleen Brooks and I can go on and on.

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. Jillian Dodd, for sure. I love her style of writing. I would ask her about how to stay confident when writing a long series like she has. She executed all the Keatyn Chronicles books amazingly.

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. I grew up in New Jersey and moved to Las Vegas when I got tired of the snow. I met my husband who is in the Army and now live in NC. I’m a very proud mom of two kids. A boy, Aiden and a girl, Peyton. I’m that annoying mom that posts ten million things about her kids because they make me so proud to be their mother. About my books… I use to co-write but decided I like writing on my own much better. I wrote my first solo novel, Twist of Fate when I was pregnant with my second child. I didn’t think people would love it as much as they did so that makes me happy.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. I’m currently working on two different novels. They are coming along nicely and am in no rush to finish them. My husband and kids comes before writing so please be patient with me lol. I’m really excited to meet everyone at this event and future ones as well.

Q. What made you start writing.

A. My father was a writer, so I think he just passed it on down to me.

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. First and foremost is probably anything YA since that is the category I write in, but I’m also starting to get into NA.
I like anything Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, Coming of Age, and Romance.

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. Erotica lol. I get embarrassed too easily and my mother loves to read everything I write…I don’t how she’d feel about that lol.

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. I would love to get into Romance.

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. Hands down, Cassandra Clare, Stephen King, Patricia Briggs, and Chloe Neill.

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. Cassandra Clare and I’d probably ask her how she writes so descriptively, without boring her readers. Seriously, it’s phenomenal.

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. At the moment I only two books in a series out and hopefully (cross your fingers) my new NA paranormal will release this coming December. I wouldn’t be able to choose between the two because each main character has a little part of me. In Sins of the Fallen, Max is a seventeen year old boy who learns he’s a Nephilim and represents one of the deadly sins. He goes through much loss and betrayal at such a young age and you see him on how he copes. In my upcoming new series titled, Shift, we follow Mackenzie who’s a lone-wolf and gets found by the Brooklyn Pack. She’s sarcastic and witty, and doesn’t take much seriously until she is put between the Alpha and Beta.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. I have a new paranormal series coming out December 9th called Shift. A Sins of the Fallen Novella is coming out January 28th and the third novel in the SOTF series comes out May/June 2015.

Q. What made you start writing.

A. When I was 17, I had a very close friend who 20, and was in an abusive relationship. I tried over, and over again to talk to her. To see that being his punching bag wasn’t love. One day I put a story on paper and the next time I saw her, I asked her to read my “English Assignment.” I played it off as if I wanted her opinion. I asked her what she thought of it and she was appalled at the female’s behavior. She couldn’t believe how she was so easily manipulated into doing things she wouldn’t normally do, and how the man mistreated the woman. So, I asked her, “How is that different from your situation?” When she realized what I was doing, she got really pissed. She didn’t talk to me for a month. Out of the blue one day, she called me, insisting that we go to lunch. I can still remember the rage boiling inside of me when I saw her black eye and busted lip. Her eyes were filled with shame and regret, the sadness in them tore my heart out. I sat down with her, and we talked about what had happened and what her options were. She left him, but several weeks later went back. Two weeks after that, they had another fight, but this one took her from me. More Than Friends and Forever & More sparked a path I never thought I would choose. Since I started this series I don’t think I could ever do anything else with my life.

Q. What are your favorite book genres.

A. I love contemporary and anything dark.

Q. What is one thing people write in their stories that you could never see yourself writing about.

A. I don’t think I could write anything about teens. I can’t write YA not because I don’t enjoy the genre. I think its because I’m to perverted and it just doesn’t seem right to put my mind into creating a teenager. When I think teen I can’t picture myself at that age, all I can see is my seven and four year old daughters and like any mother I don’t even want to go there.

Q. If you could delve into another genre and it be as successful as the one you occupy, what would it be.

A. Right now I have only written contemporary, I would LOVE to delve into dark erotica.

Q. Who are some of your favorite Authors.

A. Oh gosh lets see, Melissa Stone (who is the love of my life), Jettie Woodruff, Leddy Harper, Ashli Rose, Scott Hildreth and Rebecca Sherwin. This list is a mile long but those are the first ones that come to mind.

Q. If you could sit down and pick the brain of any Author living or dead. Who would it be and what would you ask them.

A. I would love to sit down with Skye Turner and ask her is she would make a “How to talk southern” tutorial video with me. I love the way she talks.

Q. Here’s your chance to tell the readers about you & your books. Out of the books you’ve written, which book would you like for them to start with. The one that gives them the true you as an Author.

A. You should definitely start More Than Friends then jump into Forever & More. Right now these are my only publications, both are available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Q. Thank you for your participation in our Author Spotlight, any parting words for the readers. Any upcoming projects you’d like for them to know about?

A. Right now I am currently working on a spin off of The Friend Zone Series, as per popular demand Sara and Harley will be getting their own story. I’m hoping that it will be out by the end of the year, if everything goes according to the plans. I also have a novel I’m working on that will link to three others authors. We are all very excited about this series and we do not have a publication date as of yet. On top of those two WIPs I have three more than I am tinkering with one is a dark erotic thriller, the other is a contemporary romance and lastly the one I’m sort of scared of is a dark erotic novel. So there are lots of good things coming up within the next year and I hope to be able to share more about them soon.
